WARPLANE DARTING ABOUT Convair F2Y Sea Dart
DARTING ABOUT
The Convair F2Y Sea Dart was an American seaplane fighter aircraft that rode on twin hydro-skis during takeoff and landing. As a test aircraft, the Convair Sea Dart flew as late as 1957, but its use as an operational jet fighter never happened. Five airframes were built. One was lost in the crash, and the other four survive on display It is the only seaplane to have exceeded the speed of sound. Armament for proposed operational Sea Darts would have included 20-mm cannons and different types of air-to-air missiles. (Photographed at: San Diego Air & Space Museum)
